A Boy in Battle
“A Boy in Battle” is the account of a young recruit who is sent to the southern gate to defend it against the Warped.
As a boy I dreamed to see the glory of battle. When I heard I was going to defend the wall of my city I knew this was my chance and I hoped to become a hero. But I wasn’t ready for the horror of war. I cowered in fear as grown men around me turned from brash warriors into wads of mewing, bloody meat. In the first hour of battle, I decided there was no glory here, that there could be no glory in this butcher-shop.
Then I saw a band of warriors hold the gate alone against dozens of the foe. But these were not the heroes I knew from stories. They held the line not with quiet dignity. They held with fury and with hate. As the battle raged, I could not tell the monsters from the men as they circled and snarled in pools of blood. When the enemy charged the wall one final time, the heroes killed dozens in the breach and then raised their notched and gory blades to the sky and demanded the gods send more. In that moment, I saw the true glory of battle and I closed my eyes and prayed to never see it again.
