Times are desperate in Sanctuary. The White Seers have protected the city for a century since the Sundering. Powerful Wyrdstorms have often threatened to destroy the city but the power of the Seers has shielded the city. In the last few years the Wyrdstorms have begun to fade. While a few still roam the wastes to terrify the unwary, many of the larger storms have vanished.
Now all kinds of terrible creatures are roaming the landing, searching for flesh and gold. The Seers have great power, but even they cannot be everywhere at once, and the people of Sanctuary must be protected. There are not enough warriors to man the walls, watch the gates and protect the watch-towers that dot the land.
To protect the city the Seers have long had a practice of resurecting ancient warriors from the tombs under the city. These warriors rarely have a memory of their past lives and in many cases even the Seers do not know who they were. The Risen are generally regarded with a certain amount of dread but are tolerated for the protection they provide. There are many rumors of Risen going berserk or simply wandering off into the wastes, never to be heard from again.
